Construction of a new nuclear power plant has begun in southwestern Iran, the Agency for Atomic Energy has announced.
The project, whose launch on state television was announced by agency chief Mohamed Eslami, will last seven years.
A nuclear power plant of 300 megawatts will cost between 1.5 and 2 billion dollars, Eslami said.
Iran has a nuclear power plant in Bušeru, in the south of the country, with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.
The new power plant was originally supposed to be built by a French company which later refused, Eslami said, adding that other countries avoided cooperation with Iran because of the sanctions.
