North Korean leader Kim Jong Un urged South Korean President Ms Ji Jin to attend the Pyongyang summit, Seoul said.

The call was handed over by the sister of North Korea's leader, Kim Jo Jong, who said Kim Jong Un is ready to meet with the leader of South Korea "as soon as possible," a spokesman for the South Korean president said.

The North Korean leader yesterday arrived in South Korea for the official opening of the Winter Olympic Games, the first of the ruling dynasty of the north that came to the south since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

The announcement of the two Koreas summit would be the third such meeting, Frans Press said, adding that the previous two were held in Pyongyang in 2000 and 2007.

The spokesman said the South Korean President said that Seoul and Pyongyang should continue to work on creating conditions for holding the summit and urged the continuing dialogue between the US and North Korea as soon as possible, AP reported.

One day earlier, South Korean President Jung Ji-in and nominally North Korean head of state Kim Jong Nam met and shook hands before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyongyang. The presidents of rival countries laughed as they shook hands in a relaxed atmosphere.
